Handmade OSU Needlepoint Pillow Adds Warmth and Beauty to the Home of Ohio State University President
Louise's Needlework Teams up with Local Designer
Not just pillow talk but OSU needlepoint pillow talk
When interior designer Sally McDonald, President of Interiorworks, was asked to decorate a pre-1920’s home in Bexley, Ohio, she knew it would need some very special furnishings. After all, the home was getting a $2 million makeover before the new president, E. Gordon Gee, of The Ohio State University moved in.
“I was working for Louise’s Needlework at the time when Sally mentioned she was working on the Gee renovation project.” says Jill Elia, who purchased the Powell, Ohio needlepoint shop in October 2009. “After showing Sally some needlepoint pillows I had made for my home, she asked if I’d be interested in making a custom OSU needlepoint pillow that would bring warmth and school spirit into Mr. Gee's home.”
Difficult, Yet Relaxing
Like most needlepointers who like difficult yet relaxing projects, Jill contacted local artist Stacy Morris to work with Sally to create a design that met Sally’s needs. Once Stacy and Sally agreed on a design, Stacy transferred the design to a 16 x 24, 18 count canvas.
With the painted canvas in hand, the experienced needlepoint team at Louise’s went into action selecting threads and matching colors to the fabric samples Sally provided to them. The team selected high quality threads made from a blend of wool and silk from Caron’s Impressions.
A Communal Effort Combined with the
Inspiration of the Finest Colors and Fabrics
“Caron’s color pallet provided the best color match to the scarlet and gray colors in the fabrics Sally was trying to match. The threads also laid nicely on the canvas. We then selected a variety of stitches to complement the design and shape of the pillow.” said Elia. “What made the project fun was that we spread the stitching of the canvas among our staff."
Over the course of a few months, the stitching of the canvas was completed and the canvas was turned over to Sally. She arranged the finishing and presented the OSU needlepoint pillow to Mr. Gee where it now accents his beautiful living room.
